Tradition In Education and Student Services
Central Washington University, a comprehensive public institution, was founded in 1891. Known for its small class sizes, personal attention, and opportunities for students to involve themselves in research and leadership, CWU provides high quality education. Located in the center of the state of Washington in the town of Ellensburg, we are just two hours east of Seattle. In addition to our main campus in Ellensburg, we have three University Centers near Seattle. The 380-acre campus in Ellensburg has 21 academic buildings, 17 residence halls, and six apartment complexes. Other facilities include a half-million-volume library, botanical greenhouse, fine arts complex, three performing arts theatres, and an aquatic facility that holds an NCAA regulation size swimming pool.
Central Washington University has an outstanding reputation in student service. Students know that their concerns are important and that faculty and staff are always ready to help. Central Washington University has about 7,000 students and an average class size of less than 20 students. This allows students to receive individual attention from their professors and fellow students. Traditionally, there are 150-200 international students attending CWU.
Complete College Experience
Though moderate in size, CWU offers more than 100 academic majors and eight pre-professional programs at the undergraduate level. No matter what major you select, you will gain a broad-based liberal arts foundation through our General Education curriculum. Students have ample opportunities to expand their cultural and social experiences through more than 125 programs, clubs, organizations, and varsity/intramural sports as well as international and student exchange programs.
Quality Programs
Central Washington University is nationally recognized for its music programs. With a new music education building, these programs will accelerate even further. The University also has very strong business administration and accounting programs. Each year, Central Washington University accounting students score in the top 1 percent on the national CPA exam.
Central Washington University offers the only four-year flight technology program in the Northwest region of the United States. Most of our flight technology students work for a major airline after graduation. In addition to the programs mentioned above, Central Washington University offers many more popular programs such as computer science, art, Asia/Pacific studies and all the science programs.
The University English as a Second Language (UESL) Program
UESL's year-round intensive English program emphasizes academic preparation in a friendly supportive environment where each student receives personal attention. Popular courses include Computers, TOEFL, Business, Volunteering, and Film Making. For more information, please visit the UESL web site.
Conditional Admission
Conditional Admission allows you to be accepted to CWU under-graduate programs without the required English proficiency. To be eligible for Conditional Admission, students must meet all other international admission requirements and be admitted to the UESL Program. After students complete the fifth level and receive a recommendation (based on a minimum of B+ in all ESL classes and excellent work) from the UESL Program they will be officially admitted to CWU undergraduate programs. Students can also present the required TOEFL score at any time. To receive a Letter of Conditional Admission, send CWU undergraduate application materials and UESL materials to the UESL Program.
International Student Services
International Student Services can be regarded as the home away from home for our international students. Our international student advisors provide friendly assistance to undergraduate and graduate students in F-1 immigration status. Advising areas include campus life-related issues, academics, student visas and adjustment to American university life.
Activities
The state of Washington offers a variety of activities because of its diverse landscape and geological structure. Our environment includes rain forest, desert, alpine mountains, coastal area and wetlands. This is why outdoor activities are so popular in Washington.
When not busy with schoolwork, students can go out and enjoy snow skiing, river floating, white water rafting, mountain biking, rock climbing, horse back riding, fishing, and camping. Best of all, these activities are available close to CWU.
CWU also has various clubs and organizations that foster learning and leadership skills. If you are interested in sports, CWU offers many intramural sports that you can join. With modern facilities and equipment, the CWU Nicholson Pavilion is a great place to exercise and participate in-group sports.
The International Student Association routinely gathers international students and organizes interesting activities such as trips to Seattle or Canada, camping, international dinners and much, much more.
