Comprehensive English Program
ALI offers a full-time, English-language and American-culture program for non-native English speakers. Courses are 18 hours per week, from Monday through Thursday. Nine language levels—from beginner to advanced–ensure that you are placed in the course that best meets your needs and your level of English-language proficiency.
At advanced levels (seven through nine), students can choose from afternoon electives or evening courses at the ALI. They also can enroll in noncredit classes with American students offered by NYU-SPS, where there are hundreds of courses from which to choose. This flexibility allows advanced students to enroll in educational programs that best suit their interests and needs, and to have the experience of studying with Americans.
Professional English Program
ALI part-time courses are designed to address the specific needs of international professionals, with classes meeting in the evening and on Saturday to accommodate this population’s busy schedules. With a wide variety of offerings—from accent correction to business writing—the part-time program focuses on helping students to develop the skills necessary to succeed in their careers as well as to function comfortably in more casual settings. Classes are taught by highly qualified instructors in supportive, small-group settings, which provide intensive, individualized feedback on the use of language in leading discussions, making oral presentations, and writing and revising papers.
Academic English Program
In this program, students already enrolled in NYU degree programs, both graduate and undergraduate, as well as those applying to NYU and other American universities, learn the writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in American academic settings. Students at levels five through eight study full or part-time, often working in small groups on projects that refine their skills. In classes with other international students, students have the chance to discuss the challenges of studying with Americans in the US.
