A different language is a different vision of life. - Federico Fellini

Whether you are learning English for academic or professional purposes, the NYU-SPS American Language Institute, located in the heart of New York City, offers a unique vision of American urban culture and the English language. As an ALI student, you will have the opportunity to learn English in a setting that promotes cultural awareness and that builds upon the diversity of our students, faculty members, and the city itself.

Strolling through Washington Square Park on the way to the NYU library or the gym, attending classes in the historic Woolworth Building or at the Midtown Center, visiting ethnic neighborhoods to learn about food and culture–you will find yourself continually inspired by new experiences that are sure to broaden your vision of the world and stimulate your language skills. To enhance your language studies, you also will have access to a wide array of lectures, seminars, and performances sponsored by NYU-SPS and by the University at large.

New York City will provide an exciting backdrop for learning English, for expanding your mind, and for mastering new communications skills.

The NYU Advantage

Each year, more than 4,500 international students from over 130 countries take courses through New York University’s 18 schools and colleges. Last year, ALI welcomed more than 1,000 students from over 30 countries. In today’s world, the connections that you make through your studies at NYU-SPS and the University at large will last a lifetime, providing invaluable personal and professional contacts. As an NYU-SPS ALI student you will enjoy access to the University’s world-class library system and computer labs, as well as a diverse range of cultural events and state-of-the-art athletic facilities.

Comprehensive English Program

ALI offers a full-time, English-language and American-culture program for non-native English speakers. Courses are 18 hours per week, from Monday through Thursday. Nine language levels—from beginner to advanced–ensure that you are placed in the course that best meets your needs and your level of English-language proficiency.

At advanced levels (seven through nine), students can choose from afternoon electives or evening courses at the ALI. They also can enroll in noncredit classes with American students offered by NYU-SPS, where there are hundreds of courses from which to choose. This flexibility allows advanced students to enroll in educational programs that best suit their interests and needs, and to have the experience of studying with Americans.

Professional English Program

ALI part-time courses are designed to address the specific needs of international professionals, with classes meeting in the evening and on Saturday to accommodate this population’s busy schedules. With a wide variety of offerings—from accent correction to business writing—the part-time program focuses on helping students to develop the skills necessary to succeed in their careers as well as to function comfortably in more casual settings. Classes are taught by highly qualified instructors in supportive, small-group settings, which provide intensive, individualized feedback on the use of language in leading discussions, making oral presentations, and writing and revising papers.

Academic English Program

In this program, students already enrolled in NYU degree programs, both graduate and undergraduate, as well as those applying to NYU and other American universities, learn the writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in American academic settings. Students at levels five through eight study full or part-time, often working in small groups on projects that refine their skills. In classes with other international students, students have the chance to discuss the challenges of studying with Americans in the US.
