Why did you decide to study in the U.S.A.?

This country is a world leader in economics, politics, and business and American music and movies are famous all over the world. I also wanted to learn about American culture and attitudes.

How did you choose your intensive English program?

I decided to study here because the University of Hawai`i is well-known and prestigious for their linguistics, English as a Second Language, and teacher-training programs.

What do you like best?

The teachers are always kind and take time to explain the lessons in detail. The professors and students are very friendly and open-minded to Asian students. The English Language Institute (ELI) program is very intensive and demanding, but useful.

What do you miss most?

I often want to eat Korean food that my mother makes, although the food in Hawai`i is good.

How has your English improved?

I have been studying in Hawai`i for three months. The ESL writing class is helping me learn how to write a research paper and the listening/speaking class is teaching me how to listen to lectures systematically and to make presentations and speak effectively in public. My English is improving everyday.

What was your biggest surprise?

My biggest surprise was the leisurely atmosphere of the campus. I was surprised to see students lying on the grass and relaxing.

... your biggest disappointment?

There is not enough public transportation in Hilo. We have to take the shuttle van operated by the university or buy a bicycle. I have gotten good exercise by walking on a regular basis.

How have you handled:

...Language differences?

I try to be sociable and I am not afraid of making mistakes.

...Finances?

My tuition is paid by my Korean school, and my parents help me with living costs.

...Adjusting to a different educational system?

The professors here are very friendly and I can easily get help from them. I also made an effort to make friends with my classmates and my professors which helped me adjust to the classes.

What are your activities?

I stay in the dorm which has many programs such as trips and marine sports. I go to beaches and enjoy hiking. I also take part in the International Student Association activities such as United Nations Day.

How is your U.S. education relevant to your personal goals and to the needs of your country?

After returning to Korea, I will get a job in the advertising field. Fluent English and different cultural experiences will make me more competitive in international business.

What is your advice to other students from your country?

Students should study English as much as possible before coming to the USA. After they arrive here, they should not be afraid of making mistakes when they speak English to native speakers. The more courageous you are, the more you will benefit.
